Good Conversations: Forced marriage, slavery and family violence

Come to Melbourne Town Hall and hear from human rights champion Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs, and other leaders in policy and practice, as we explore the link between forced marriage, slavery and family violence.

This conversation will challenge the idea that criminalisation of the practice is the only solution. Forced marriage happens in Australia too

Around the world, one in five girls are said to be married before the age of 18. There are over 650 million women alive today who were married as children. Child, early and forced marriage is a global human rights abuse that cuts across countries, cultures, religions and ethnicities—and Australia is not immune.

The true extent of forced marriage in Australia is unknown as available data is not comprehensive. Over the last five years, the Australian Federal Police have investigated over 170 cases of alleged forced marriage. This number is only the tip of the iceberg.
